queue assist scheme
York Maze offer a virtual queue system for guest who disability means they are unable to queue. There is no official information on the website about what disability proof is required however, I recommending bringing some proof of disability stating you are unable to queue. For example, we will take my access card with the standing and queueing symbol on. You can find out how queue assist works on the day of your visit in the ‘how queue assist works’ section of this blog post.
Planning my Visit
York Maze is a brand new place for me so I just had a look on website at the activities I wanted to do and them put them order of where abouts they were on the park map that you can find by clicking here York Maze Map. I then put them into a visual plan using Widget symbols as this was a new place for me so needed to know what to expect. Bellow I have included images of my visual activity plan n case its any help. We did not include things like lunch in the plan as had no idea how long the activities would take.
Arrivals
In this section of the blog we detail what will happen when you arrive at York Maze so you know what to expect and can get on the rides as quickly as possible.
blue badge parking
There was a couple of rows of blue badge parking located right outside the entrance. It is worth noting the car bark was stones for flooring so quiet challenging for wheelchairs.

entering the park
We entered through the admissions area as seen in the images bellow. In the admissions area our tickets were scanned and we were given an activity booklet with a pencil. We arrived at York Maze in the afternoon and their was no queue to get in.
Once through the admissions area there was a courtyard style area with undercover seating, gift shop, toilets with a separate baby change from the disabled and a café. There is also free ID wristband for kid station located as you enter.

How Queue Assist Works
In order to use the queue assist at York Maze simply tell the staff member at the attraction that you can’t queue and they will give you a return time to come back. There was a staff member at the entrance to each attraction. sometimes you may need to go up the exit in order to speak to a member of staff. The queue assist works on all attractions except the Pharaohs Corn-quest.
Please note: We visited on a weekday just as the schools were braking up for the summer holidays and probably due to the rainy weather it was quiet. We did not have to wait for any of the attractions so didn’t need to use the queue assist scheme meaning I have no personal experience using this service.
Our Day at York Maze
Now we’re in the park and have sorted all of our access out it’s time to enjoy the mazes and get exploring. In this section you will find a write up of our day of York Maze. Including all the accessibility information of course. So come and enjoy the day with us!
The Corniest Show on Earth
We started our visit by watching the 3pm showing of The Corniest Show on Earth. The show area was undercover and had a popcorn food stand in the show area. In this show there was a generator machine that could answer any question! These all ended up being corn jokes. For example, the show host went into the audience and asked people to name an animal as soon as someone said dog he went back on stage and got a dog teddy that he put into the generator where he asked a joke about dogs and corn the answer the machine gave was corn dog. These style jokes as well as some songs made up a light-hearted and interactive 25 minute show.
In terms of access, The seats for the show had no backs as seen int he images bellow and there was no designated wheelchair space however, plenty of space for wheelchair users and pushchairs to sit at the end of each row. This show was quiet noisy and including sound effects audience participation encouraging people to shout out. There were some mild spot lighting effects. The show area did not close when the show started allowing you to dip in and out of the show as you pleased.

Pharaohs Corn-quest
The Pharaohs Corn-quest is an indoor Maze set in ancient times. I was not able to do much of this maze at all due to stairs however, from what I did experience the theming was ansient Egypt vibes. The areas in the maze were quiet small. I have not experienced enough of this attraction to be able give a full review.
In terms of access, Pharaohs Corn-quest had a flight of stairs with no colour markings and a overhang. The stairs were also very dirty so bum shuffling was not really an option. There was also no queue assist available for this attraction as it is a one way maze with an exit located at the other side.

House of Cornfusion
In the house of cornfusion maze there was lots of different obstacles and Illusions. In this attraction there was a mirror maze, a corridor where it gets smaller and the celling gets lower. slanted corridor, giant carrot obstacles, shaking corridor, light tunnel that moves, air bag obstacle. This was a fun and interactive attraction that I found quiet unique however, it was a bit challenging to get around. In order to go in House of Cornfusion you have to be with someone 16 years or older.
In terms of access, the House of Cornfusion had a few sets of 2 to 3 steps and lots of uneven floors as well as some steep ramps, the tilt corridor and shaking floor. There was lots of sensory effects in this attractions including loud sound effects and music as well as lots of flashing and strobe lights.

Character Meet and Greets
Throughout the day you were able to meet a number of the characters from York Maze at the Cob Cottage located around the corner from the The Corniest Show on Earth. As you can see in the image bellow I’m meeting Kernel Kernel and Sweetie Corn. You can also meet Russell the Crow from the Crowmania Ride. In the image bellow you can see the times for the meet and greats. The characters also walk around the park.
In terms of access, there was a big step up into the meet and great area however, I’m sure the characters would be able to step down to meet and take picture if not able to get up the step. When we went there was no queue to meet the characters,

COBsleigh Run
The COBsleigh Run is a bobsleigh style ride. In order to go on the COBsleigh Run you must be 0.8 meters tall and only one person allowed on each cart. The attraction is simple you pull your cart up the ramp when at the top of the bobsleigh a staff member will help you get in and then set off the bobsleigh. Once at the bottom you put your cart back. I really enjoyed the COBsleigh Run it was a fun attraction for all the family to enjoy.
In terms of access, the COBsleigh Run was ramped to get to the top however, there was to steps in order to exit and enter the COBsleigh Run. The cart have a retractable handle you use to pull it up the ramp there was some barrios to walk around near the top of the ramp. There was no specific sensory effects for this attraction however, when people came down the COBsleigh Run it made a loud noise as you can hear in the video bellow.

Maze of Illusions
The Maze of Illusions was set in the woodland area and had many illusion effects including funny mirrors and lots of things that go funny when you look at them. This maze was fun to explore and a nice outdoors area due to my vision issues I really didn’t get anything out of the sight illuminations like seeing things in pictures however, really enjoyed the mirrors.
In terms of access, A lot of the ground in the Maze of Illusions was very uneven due to it being in the woods and tree routes. It was possible to get around with a mobility aid just a little challenging. It was nice and quiet in this maze as well and away from the chaos of some of the other attractions.

Cornula 1
At this point in our visit it started raining heavily so they were unable to do the normal full show. However, the staff still kept it raining and did the races. Essentially there is 4 teams each with a colour they pick 4 visitors to come in the car for the race and everyone cheers for who their colour team. As you can see from the video my car wasn’t working so the staff came and pushed it to the finish line.
In terms of access, the Cornula 1 show watching area was level however, the ground was a little tricky to navigate with a mobility aid. In order to get into the car you had to be able to step over the Barrer as seen in the images bellow. There was nothing the guest had to do in order to make the car move so nice and simple for people with cognitive impairments to join in. I did not experience the full show due to weather however, the sensory effects I saw were loud music and loud sound effects so highly recommend ear defenders.

Giant Maize Maze
It was now time for us to go and explore the Giant Maize Maze! This year it was Toy Story theme meaning all the questions were themed to Toy Story as well as the maze route made an image of all the Toy Story characters. Online it said the maze takes around 1 hour and a half we found it to take us about 40 minutes but if you have slow walkers or little once could take a lot longer. When entering York Maze we were given some activity books inside two of the challenges are for the Giant Maize Maze as seen in the images bellow. There was 6 points in the maze each with a viewing platform and quiz question as seen in images bellow. We found the big number on the viewing platform helpful to get around the maze however, there is a map that you can find by scanning the QR code inside the maze. At this point it was still raining so the maze was very quiet. It got a bit boring and tricky for the last 2 numbers so I don’t think it is the best attraction for people who get board easily or doing the same thing. However, there was loads of other mazes like the dinosaur and music maze that were shorter and more interactive that we didn’t get time to do. At the end of the maze you are given a sticker that says you completed the maze.
In terms of access, the path in the maze were surprisingly level and easy to navigate with a wheelchair or mobility aid. As disused above in the maze are 6 viewing platforms these are not accessible as up a flight of stairs however, not necessary to complete the maze. The quiz questions can all be completed without using the viewing platforms.

Crowmania Ride
My favourite attraction was the Crowmania Ride. This was a 20 minute tractor ride with lots of water and special effects. The storyline of the Crowmania Ride was that York Maze was being took over by Crows and we had to stop them. Throughout our journey we met a number of actors and animatronics as we as the crow man at the end who we defeated. The ride had so much going on it was brilliant the host on the tracker ride was called Phoebe and she was great at keeping everyone engaged and telling lots of jokes.
In terms of access, the Crowmania Ride was fully wheelchair accessible meaning you could stay in your chair on the ride. They had an access ramp allowing everyone to be able to get onto the ride. During the ride there is lots of sensory effects and you are warned before the ride starts that it could cause sensory overload. The sensory effects were loud noises, music, fire and smoke effects and lots of water effects that will spray you. I am a real sensory seeker when it comes to water so really enjoyed all the water effects however, it was very loud so I recommend ear defenders.

Other attractions and play areas
There was a number of smaller attractions and play areas that disserve a mention however, were not appropriate and/or accessible for me.
- Utter Cornage water area: The Utter Cornage water area would be a great on a hot day it works by turning the wheels that put the water into the bucket that when full dunks the water on the person head. The Utter Cornage water area was majority wheelchair accessible.
- Cornstruction Zone: Located near the front of the park is a massive construction zone with sand and water play perfect for imaginative play and having a good explore. There was no sensory effects in this area just the water and sand. This area is all on sand so not suitable for many mobility aids however it is surrounded by a grass area.
- Corn on the Club Crazy Golf: Located by the exit to the Maze of Illusions is a a 9 hole crazy golf that was all corn themed. During are visit this area was very crowded however, I believe it was because the crazy golf was in quite a small area.
- The Volcorno: The Volcano is a massive inflatable volcano climbing wall with a big side. This attraction was the only one that closed during the heavy rain.
- Cobstacle Course: The Cobstacle Course was a fully undercover inflatable obstacle course where two people could race.
- Popcorn Pillow: The Popcorn Pillow was a giant bouncy pillow that was also located undercover. This was a very popular attraction during our visit.
- Corn Snake Tower Slides: These two massive tunnel slides were also undercover they were slides that you had to go down in a mat. The Corn Snake Tower Slides was up a steep spiral staircase.
- The Cornwall: Located near the exit of Giant Maize Maze is The Cornwall. This is a a small rock climbing wall that you climb across with no harness or helmet required.

Final Thoughts
In conclusion, I think York Maze is a great family day out. I was shockingly impressed with how permanent and accessible the venue was. There was by far enough that was fully wheelchair accessible to fill your day. There was a few attractions that were not sensory friendly however, that is to be expected with these kind of attractions. We spent 4 hours there on a quiet day and did not have enough time to get everything on my plan done so will definitely go back next year. There was no changing place here however they did have a large disabled toilet I would live to see them transform into a changing place in the future. Anyway, that’s all from todays adventure I hope your all surviving the summer holidays. I hope to see you on my next adventure, bye for now.
